TRUST FOR THE AMERICAS/OAS
ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE CCA AWARD 2008
July 7, 2008
Washington D.C, July 7, 2008. The Trust for the Americas and the Organization of American States (OAS) are accepting applications for the 2008 Corporate Citizen of the Americas Award to be given at an event in the fall in Washington, D.C.
In the last decade, corporations have played an increasing role in developing solutions to overcome poverty in communities throughout the Americas. The Corporate Citizen of the Americas Award encourages this trend by formally recognizing a company that has initiated an innovative program which benefits the community in which it operates and can serve as a model to facilitate socially responsible practices and actions by other corporations.
Last year, the Trust Selection Committee selected the Guatemalan company Pantaleon as the Winner of the 2007 Corporate Citizen of the Americas Award for its “Creating Citizens” program, a successful public private collaboration benefiting the families of the company’s workers.
During last year’s event, the Trust Selection Committee also selected two corporations for distinction. They both obtained an Honorable Mention in the 2007 Corporate Citizen of the Americas. Cemex received a mention for work done through their “Patrimonio Hoy” program in Mexico and Telefónica received a mention for its “Proniño” program, which protects the rights of children throughout Latin America.
This year, the Trust Selection Committee will choose the award recipient and alternates. The Trust Selection Committee will review the qualifying nominees and select up to three finalists to include one winner and two honorable mentions. The Committee will include former officials from Latin America, CEO’s of multinational corporations and experts in the field of corporate social responsibility. Nominations and applications for the Award will be accepted by the Trust for the Americas until August 15th, 2008.
